Comments: A touch of JRR Tolkien, when I open up this comic book and get a detailed map of Bless You. I love these little characters in The Adventures of Carl, they remind me of those Schmoos in the comic strip Lil' Abner! I would say that The Adventures of Carl #1 was a bit of Bone, a bit of Schmoo, a bit of Hilly Rose (if anyone still remembers this comic book). The Adventures of Carl is fantasy that comes to life and jumps right out of the pages literally! The story begins with an important town meeting, it has been discovered that the North Star is missing. Carl (the hero of the story) is willing to 'journey up' to find the evil King Grim to get the North Star back. You will find odd places like "Land of Funny Looking Deer", "Waters of No Name", "Flatlands", "Land of Trees with Leaves", etc. Ryan takes his characters and brings them to life right in your hands, you will find the characters bouncing off panels and wondering why 3 birds that are drawn in one panel, keep following them through other panels. Hilarious comic book with a bunch of funny punchlines. You will meet the "Carl Haters" and they will go after no other than...Carl! You will meet Wize Wall who is knowledgeable about everything and knows about Carl's quest and tells a stunned Carl that he knows what he is seeking. Heck, Wize Wall even knew Carl's name without asking! Carl will encounter a strange character named Fluffy and then will meet a diabolical character named Betty the Beast! One of the oddest characters is the "Grass of Advice", sort of like the Burning Bush in the bible..well, sort of. Grim's Castle is very omnious and kind of reminds me of the house in Amityville Horror, the castle (like the Amityville House) seems to have eyes. Follow the map and find the Big Black Dot, there are many references to that dot, which is very humorous. If you like WWE, then you will like it when Carl says..."it's rod smacking time!" Carl v. King Grim for naught, because come to find out the Northern Star was never missing, Carl was looking in the wrong direction of the sky! The Adventures of Carl is a Romper Room full of hilarious hijinks that will keep you spellbound!
Almost Normal Comics
21 pages, full size, copied. This is the story of a strange looking character named “Carl” who embarks on a journey to reclaim the North Star that was stolen by the evil King Grim. Along the way Carl travels through strange lands and encounters even stranger beings. The artwork in this comic is loose and cartoony and the writing is full of witty twist and humorous situations. If you're looking for some lighthearted fun, get your own copy of “The Adventures of Carl” and join this odd little fella on his strange quest!
The Comic Reader
From what I can tell, Ryan Crouse has been publishing his own comics since
1999, toiling away in his little corner of the world, the town of Wroxton, Saskatchewan.
His creations are a varied bunch. There's Donar: God of War, a two
issue (for now) fantasy tale, the sci-fi two-parter, Tech Storm, and
the straight-up superpowers first issue of Hero vs. Villain. His newest
release is The Adventures of Carl #1, 21 pages that once again shift
genres. The Adventures of Carl reads like a children's tale.
Carl lives in the Kingdom of Bless You, a realm that features places like "Land
of the Funny Looking Deer", "The Flat Land", and the conveniently
named "The Evil Place on the Map Where You Will Most Likely Find the Villain".
The villain here is King Grim, at least in Carl's mind. He believes Grim has
stolen the North Star from the sky, and so he sets off to travel across Bless
You to find Grim and force him to return the star.
Carl is a plush, chubby, little star-shaped creature, one of many such critters
living in a village of petite mushroom houses. (I'm not sure if Carl is three
apples tall.) He is packed with attitude and good intentions, which makes The
Adventures of Carl a kid-friendly read. The first issue is filled with
strange lands, odd creatures and bizarre situations
The illustrations in this first issue are amateurish, but creator Ryan Crouse
does show a keen sense of comedic timing. He also knows how to move a story
from one point to next, creating, for the most part, a story that moves on its
own accord. His illustration work simply needs to catch up with his sense of
storytelling, which it will if he continues to create comics. (Chad Boudreau)
